Pink Month - Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October has been designated as Pink Month or breast cancer awareness month. Pink month begins 1st October and ends 31st October. Many countries have come together and joined forces and resources to try raise awareness and educate those concerned about the disease, including early identification and signs and symptoms associated with breast cancer.

In 2020, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 685 000 deaths globally. As of the end of 2020, there were 7.8 million women alive who were diagnosed with breast cancer in the past 5 years, making it the world’s most prevalent cancer. Breast cancer mortality changed little from the 1930s through to the 1970s. Improvements in survival began in the 1980s in countries with early detection programmes combined with different modes of treatment to eradicate invasive disease. Find useful information:

For me personally this has become a very important month as someone very close to me was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was 'lucky' enough to have found the lump early so even though she had a mastectomy and had to go through chemo she managed to get through it and become stronger. At this point I can't stress enough that these women need support, both emotionally and physically to be able to handle the process of therapy. Having someone support you is as important as the actual therapy and makes a huge difference to the woman's life and psychology.

This year I will join the "Race for the Cure" (https://www.raceforthecure.eu/en?r=1)

race for the cure

which is an event that will take place across Europe in support of breast cancer organisations and hospitals to collect funds and raise awareness.

You can all search what your country/community will be doing and contribute to the effort to create awareness and support.

Another local (Cyprus) event is that of Europa Donna Cyprus which works tirelessly collecting funds and supporting cancer patients and their families. Each year they have a walk which is supported by thousands and creates awareness. (https://europadonna.com.cy). I hope to see many people out to support these efforts.
