To hair or not to hair?

The younger generation isn't so worried about body/facial hair studies show. Apparently 1 in 3 young men don't mind if a woman has upper lip hair for example. Scary? I think so!

Growing up as a 'hairy' Cypriot in Zimbabwe, where all my friends were English, blonde and hairless was an embarrassment. To add to it I had parents who came from old Cyprus - quite conservative and 'old school' when it came to shaving or waxing...and going out with boys...or going out generally before the age of 20... (but thats a story for another blog post...yes it was traumatic! ;))

In todays society the millennials don't get stuck on little things like a hairy lip or underarms. It's even become fashionable to have hairy, bushy eyebrows or even a unibrow! Thanks to Greek Cypriot model Sophia Hadjipanteli who has put us on the map as a hairy nation with her statement-making unibrow!

Now personally I come from a generation where we only left hair on our head. Our eyebrows were nicely shaped and tweezed and there wasn't a hair to be seen anywhere on our bodies. Ofcourse I did all this behind my parents back and made sure I wore long sleeved tops and long pants in front of them. All this up until I left Zim and moved to Cyprus where my fellow hairy compatriots had found the best and easiest ways to remove any unwanted hair! It was like magic!

At this point I must mention that body hair or facial hair has a purpose, thats the truth! If you are ok with having hairy underarms or legs or whatever then you should go with it! No one judges anymore and accepts you as you are. If you don't like being hairy...like me, then you should remove it...again no judgement! Do whatever makes you happy and not what society wants you to do!

Here are some facts about being hairy and why its good for you:

  1. Repairs and heals skin quicker - According to health experts, hair follicles contain stem cells which help heal our skin from wounds and bruises. Also, these follicles have a network of blood vessels, nerves and fat, speeding up the healing process.

  2. Great for our scalp - Compared to those who have hair on their heads, bald people are more prone to wounds and sun rashes, So, having hair is safer!

  3. Reduces risk of chafing - Have you ever noticed after waxing or shaving your underarms, you feel a burning sensation? It is because underarm skin with no hair tends to rub against the arm skin, which creates a burning feeling. And keeping hair reduces the risk of chafing.

  4. Keeps body odour in check - According to studies, body hair helps to disperse odours, referred to as pheromones. These chemicals attract mates.

  5. Protects against the sun - People who have hairy bodies are less prone to sunburn and rashes.

  6. Provides heat - Another purpose that hair also serves is to keep us warm.

Here's a interesting read from Daily Mail to add some more facts and information to your library...

So go forth and be hairy!
